Dinan is enchanting during the festive season. The medieval streets are lined with twinkling lights, shopfronts are wrapped in garlands and a giant Christmas tree sparkles at the heart of the town. The half-timbered buildings seem to glow under the warm light of the decorations and the cobbles shine after a winter shower.
Children post letters to Père Noël, the scent of crêpes and roasted chestnuts drifts through the air and music from a distant carousel carries softly down the streets. Locals linger in cafés over steaming cups of chocolat chaud, while visitors stroll past glowing windows and garlanded doors.
Take a wander after dark, warm drink in hand and soak up the magic of this storybook setting — a place that feels made for the sparkle of December nights.

Just a short stroll from Quai du Val, the village of Léhon hosts its annual Christmas Market — a magical weekend that transforms the abbey into a festive wonderland. This year the market will be on the 6th and 7th December and it’s always one of the most anticipated and charming local events of the season.
The abbey courtyard glows with fairy lights, the air filled with the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. Stalls spill over with handmade crafts, local delicacies and beautiful gifts, while music echoes gently beneath the ancient arches. As dusk falls, the stone walls shimmer with golden light and the village feels truly timeless — a scene that could have come straight from a Christmas card.
Arrive early for a riverside walk in the daylight, then linger as evening settles in to enjoy the lights, the warmth of the crowd and the peaceful beauty of Léhon dressed for the season.

For a touch of seaside sparkle, head to Saint-Malo’s Christmas market, where an ice rink appears beside the ancient ramparts and the scent of roasted chestnuts fills the air.
Glide beneath strings of twinkling lights, browse wooden chalets filled with handmade gifts and listen to carols drifting on the sea breeze.
When you’re ready to warm up, settle in a café overlooking the harbour with a steaming chocolat chaud mulled cider or wine and watch the reflections dance across the water.
The mix of festive music, salt air and glowing city walls makes it a wonderfully atmospheric outing — pure winter magic by the sea, just a 30 minute drive from Quai du Val.

Here in France, Christmas Eve is the heart of the celebration — families gather for long dinners that stretch late into the night, filled with laughter, good wine and a table that seems to go on forever. The meal often ends with bûche de Noël, the traditional yule log cake,
By contrast, Christmas Day is calm and unhurried. Shops and mosrestaurants close, the roads are quiet and there’s a sense of stillness that feels almost magical. It’s the perfect moment to do something different: pack a picnic and head to the coast.
A bracing walk along one of Brittany’s many beaches — or perhaps a riverside trail feels wonderfully free and festive in its own simple way. The air is sharp, the light golden and the views breathtaking. Then, as the afternoon fades, return to Quai du Val for more Christmas treats and perhaps some mulled wine.

After the celebrations of Christmas, a wonderful stillness settles over Brittany. The rush has passed, the lights still twinkle, and the days seem to slow right down.
It’s the perfect time for long walks along the Rance, unhurried mornings, and afternoons spent exploring Dinan and the surrounding area at your own pace — pausing for hot coffee and buttery pastries as you go.
The cafés are quiet, the shop windows still dressed for the season and the air holds a calm that feels like a deep breath before the new year begins. It’s a time to slow down and savour the quiet beauty of winter by the river at Quai du Val… peaceful mornings, golden light and the simple pleasure of being still in such a beautiful place. It’s truly one of our favourite times to be here.

New Year’s Eve in Brittany is beautifully understated, but it carries its own quiet charm as the year winds down gently. In Dinard, locals gather to watch the brave take their traditional New Year’s swim, plunging into the freezing water in colourful costumes — a joyful, slightly mad ritual that always makes us smile!
As evening falls, the celebrations remain simple and sincere. Some enjoy a leisurely dinner at home or in at a restaurant, while others take a walk by the sea or share a quiet toast beneath the stars. For us, the ritual is always the same — a drive to Saint-Malo, a slow stroll along the ramparts and a moment to pause by the water as the clock strikes midnight.
There are no fireworks here, no loud countdowns — only the steady rhythm of the tide beneath a wide winter sky. However you choose to see in the New Year, it’s peaceful, authentic and perfectly in step with Brittany’s calm and timeless spirit.
At Quai du Val, December is for soft lights, good food and moments of calm between festive adventures. Whether you’re exploring Christmas markets, walking the Rance, or simply watching the river drift by, it’s a wonderful time to experience Brittany’s quieter, more reflective side.
Why not make this your year to celebrate the season somewhere different — beside the river, under the lights, and away from the rush? Quai du Val is waiting to welcome you.
