An Unexpected Afternoon at the Beach

It’s mid-November, yet the air feels more like late September, 19°C inland and a gentle 17°C at the coast. The sun is shining, the sky a flawless blue and suddenly, work can wait. On days like this, it would be a shame not to make the most of Brittany’s unexpected warmth and light.

A spontaneous escape to Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer

We set off for Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer, one of the Emerald Coast’s most enchanting peninsulas. Instead of heading to our usual spots, we chose to explore somewhere new, the quieter coves and hidden beaches that often go unnoticed.

Our afternoon began at Plage de la Pissotte, a small and peaceful beach tucked away on the eastern side of the Jaguine peninsula. Sheltered by low cliffs and framed by wild coastal shrubs, it feels wonderfully secluded, a place where you can truly unwind and listen to the sea. From here, the views stretch out across Arguenon Bay, calm and glistening in the autumn light.

At low tide, the coastline seems to go on forever, revealing wide sweeps of fine sand and glimmering pools perfect for quiet walks or moments of stillness. The tide differences here never cease to amaze, so dramatic that each visit feels like discovering a new landscape altogether.

From Pissotte to Haas: A Walk Between Shores

After spending some time at Plage de la Pissotte, we cut across the peninsula towards our next stop Plage des Haas, passing the Église Notre-Dame along the way, its granite walls glowing softly in the afternoon sun.

Built in the 1930s, this graceful church recalls a ship’s mast with its slender spire, a quiet tribute to Saint-Jacut’s maritime heritage. Inside, its stained-glass glows with scenes that honour generations of sailors and their stories.

Arriving at Plage des Haas, the sound of distant waves, the scent of seaweed in the air and the calls of seabirds gathered along the shoreline at low tide created a deep sense of stillness, the kind that only the coast can offer.

We wandered slowly along the beach, the soft crackle of shells and pebbles beneath our feet. Dogs played in the rock pools, splashing and chasing reflections as gulls drifted lazily above. Behind us, footprints traced a fleeting path in the damp sand, soon to be washed away as the tide crept back in later that evening.

The beauty of simple, unplanned moments

There’s something deeply calming about these late-autumn days in Brittany, the golden light, the quiet beaches and the feeling that time moves just a little slower.

We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world and even now, there is still so much more to discover. Sometimes, the best days are the ones that happen entirely by chance!

November at Quai du Val

November reveals a quieter kind of beauty. The air is mild, the colours rich, and the coast wonderfully peaceful.

Whether it’s a spontaneous trip to St Jacut de la Mer, a walk along the River Rance, or simply soaking up the late-autumn sunshine from the terrace, this is a time to pause, explore, and savour the rhythm of the seasons.

Getting to Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer  from Quai du Val

From Quai du Val in Léhon, it’s an easy and scenic drive of around 35 minutes (35 km) to reach Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer on Brittany’s Emerald Coast.

Head north from Léhon towards Dinan, then follow signs for Ploubalay / Saint-Malo (D766). At Ploubalay, turn left towards Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer, following the D19 which leads you directly onto the peninsula.
