A Perfect Autumn Sunday in Bécherel: Brittany’s Book Haven

We visited Bécherel today and were treated to the most beautiful autumnal day, cool, crisp air, golden sunshine and that perfect cosy-season feeling. The village was buzzing with life, yet still wonderfully relaxed; a true Breton autumn delight.

It was a morning made for meandering cobbled streets and browsing book stalls, taking in the gentle hustle and bustle of locals and fellow treasure-hunters doing the same. Bécherel, was France’s first “Cité du Livre” so book culture is woven into every cobbled street and sun-lit corner. It is also proudly recognised as a Petite Cité de Caractère,

There’s a quiet charm here, a sense that stories linger in the air and that life moves just a little slower, encouraging you to savour each moment. As we wandered, every doorway promised a new discovery and the scent of old books drifted through the lanes like an invitation to stay just a little longer.

It felt wonderfully fitting, coming from Quai du Val in nearby Léhon, which is also a Petite Cité de Caractère, to settle outside a charming little bookshop-café Ulysses à L'Ouest in the warm autumn sunshine. With a chai tea and a (naughty!) sweet treat in hand, we lingered and watched village life unfold around us, the perfect slow-travel pause in a place where heritage, creativity and gentle Breton charm meet.

Petites Cités de Caractère are small French towns and villages recognised for their rich heritage, preserved architecture and authentic charm. To earn this label, a village must protect its historic buildings, celebrate local culture and offer visitors a warm, character-filled experience rooted in tradition and community.

Both Léhon, home to Quai du Val and Bécherel proudly hold this designation, making this day trip a journey between two of Brittany’s most beautiful and historically treasured villages.

A Literary Village in the Heart of Brittany

Since the 1980s, Bécherel has been a thriving book-town and today it remains wonderfully true to that identity.

With around 16 independent bookshops and 13 art galleries and artisan workshops from calligraphers to book-binders, the village offers a treasure-trove of creativity and culture. Inside the bookshops, you’ll find everything from much-loved second-hand novels and modern favourites to vintage gems, rare editions, out-of-print titles and beautiful art books.

Many shops also feature local artwork, prints and handmade objects, making every doorway a chance discovery. Browsing here is half the magic; we spent time happily thumbing through shelves and even came across some nostalgic DVDs, such a charming reminder of simpler days!

We also found delightful local boutiques full of unique homewares, ceramics, kitchen treasures, old photographs and pretty decorative pieces such as La Souris des Champs, the kind of shops where you always discover something special to take home. Every corner held a little surprise, whether a stack of vintage postcards, hand-thrown pottery or charming Breton keepsakes. It’s impossible to leave empty-handed and even harder not to fall a little bit in love with the village’s creative spirit.

The Monthly Bécherel Book Market

On the first Sunday of every month, Bécherel hosts its famous Marché du Livre, when booksellers spill into the streets and squares. Vintage books, prints, maps and artisan stationery appear on every corner  and the atmosphere is joyful, social and just a little bit magical. There’s a wonderful sense of community as locals and visitors gather to chat, browse and share their latest literary discoveries. Whether you’re hunting for a rare gem or simply soaking up the convivial mood, the market adds an extra layer of charm to this enchanting book-village experience.

A Cosy Autumn Lunch

We rounded off our visit with lunch in a traditional Breton Salon de Thé l'Exliir du Temps, rustic, warm and wonderfully inviting after our morning wandering. The perfect autumn menu awaited us: a comforting bowl of velvety pumpkin soup, deliciously fresh French bread and oozy baked camembert that felt like a hug on a plate. The kind of meal that warms you from the inside out, especially after a morning spent strolling cobbled streets in crisp sunshine.

We lingered happily at our table, enjoying the gentle hum of friendly chatter drifting through the room. There’s something so special about these unhurried Breton lunches: unfussy, generous and full of heart. It was comfort-food heaven and the perfect end to our slow, book-filled morning in Bécherel. A fabulous way to spend a Sunday… slow, atmospheric, delicious and full of character... the kind of day that reminds you how lovely this corner of Brittany is in every season, but especially in autumn.

Return to Peace at Quai du Val

After a day exploring Brittany’s literary village, we returned to Léhon to curl up inside with our book finds and a cup of tea which felt like the perfect end to an autumn outing, the kind of simple pleasure that makes you slow down, exhale and savour the moment. As the afternoon faded into early evening and the golden light softened across the water, it was a reminder of how special quiet moments can be after such a charming, bustling village wander.

If you're staying with us in the cooler months, put Bécherel at the top of your list. With its bookshops, cosy cafés, countryside charm and crisp autumn sunshine, it’s a day trip full of warmth and character and returning to the snug atmosphere at Quai du Val makes it all the more memorable. It’s the perfect blend of exploration and relaxation, a little Breton adventure paired with the gentle comfort of coming back to your home-from-home.
